Pet's Name: Lenny Submitted by: Sighthound Fan
I would like to tell the story of possibly the most patient, gentle, loving, placid, docile, amazing dog in the world: My Lenny Boy! Just over five years ago I decided I wanted a dog in my life, as I had grown up around farms by preference was a Border Collie. I phoned the local rescue center who informed me they had 9 Collies in at that point in time. I made an appointment for the following weekend, but when I got there all 9 had been reserved! I decided to take a look round the other dogs anyway... Pen 1 - A female Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Penny; what a beautifull dog she was, lovley little girl, waggy tail, licky tongue, bouncing around...problem - escape artist, at the time the gate in my garden was just a latch one with a bolt across, I was told she would just undo that in seconds. Pen 2 - Litter of JRT puppies and mum...not a big fan of the breed and they weren't old enough to go Pen 3 - Male Maremma Sheepdog called Baiden; lovley dog to his owner but very protective, if you know Maremmas who will know they are huge! There was no way I could control him if something went wrong But pen 4 - Sat in a corner, cowering away, a skinny fawn coloured dog; it was love at first sight, he was so amazingly sweet and gentle, we were told he had been abandoned by his previous owners after being used for rabbiting. He was over worked, underfed and abused. They left him tied to the gate of the center one night, and you know, he was so faithfull to his abusers that he slipped his rope and ran off after them, luckily he wasn't hit by a car (it's quite a buisy road) and a taxi driver bought him back. Now Lenny lives a happy, sofa bound life! He loves people, loves children, the most gentle dog I have every met, doesn't need much exercise, doesn't need much grooming, he's the perfect pet. Even people who hate dogs have fallen in love with Lenny! He's getting old now, about 10 we think, I still make him walk 5 miles a day (10 times more than his exercise requirement), but he enjoys it and it keeps him young. I also still let him go coursing which he loves to do. My Len would be an ideal pet for anyone
(Just for extras; Baiden (the Maremma Sheepdog) is still at the shelter, 5yrs on, as he was not finding a home they kept him as the guard dog, he's old and deaf now but still protective, I work at this shelter now and see him all the time, he's a big fuss pot really)

That is such a beautiful story. I too at one stage worked at a dog rescue and saw a beautiful greyhound x named Regal. I fell in love with him, but due to the small space in my home could not bring him home. I was so happy when he found a home with a young gentleman

Sight hounds in general are wonderful soft natured animals. I would encourage anyone to look into sight hound rescue when considering adoption. There are so many abused greyhounds from the racing "sport". They are such loving gentle beings. Lenny looks like the personification of the loving greyhound nature. Willie savannh cat
